A 23-month-old calf Blackbird topped the HW production sale of Aberdeen-Angus cattle from Blackford, Auchterarder, selling for 6500gns.
The cattle, managed by William McLaren and sold to Carlisle, were dominated by Blackbird W248, a daughter of SAV Harvestor ET bull, HW Evander. She is out of Rawburn Double Oseven’s daughter Blackbird R501, who in turn is out of Kitewood Blackbird J108. The heifer was sold in foal to HW Equilibrium, a son of Australian stallion Te Mania Emperor, by Netherton Miss Effie, to MM. Lowes and Sons, Barningham, Richmond.
The Lowes were one of the biggest buyers and also went 6200gns for the 14 month old ET, HW Annie X557, the result of a flush from Netherton Mr Radar’s donor cow, HW Annie R538 who is a clean sister to the genus bull, Netherton Americano. The heifer is also one of the first to be sold in the UK by Millah Murrah Nugget, a sire banked in 2018 for an all-breed record yearling bull price of $54,000.
Four-year-old cow, HW Erica Floss and her heifer by HW Evander also made it to Barningham with the Lowes at 4800gns. Floss is out of the bull Netherton Freedom, Fabulous and a cow bred at home by Cardona Everest. Erica Floss changed hands at the calf for Evander.
Three cows sold for 5000gns, the first being six year old HW Blackcap May, an ET out of US cow, SAV Blackcap May and sired by the $285,000 SAV Harvester who produced daughters at 7000gns at the last year’s sale here. Flushed, with two preserved embryos, she sold thanks to HW Abacus V500, a son of Rawburn Boss Hogg, to MM. Tunney, Cuddington, Northwich.
A few minutes later, Seonaid McLaren’s five-year-old cow, Netherton Blackbird T875, earned the same money selling to MM. Atkinson, Newland, Ulverston. Daughter of Rawburn Boss, she is out of Netherton Blackbird L602, sire of TLA Northern Samurai. She sold thanks to Evander, another bull bred in the United States by SAV Harvestor but out of SAV Elba.
Later, the February 2021 born heifer, HW Kandy X272, matched the sale of 5000gns when purchased by Welsh producers, MM. Rowbotham, Igaid Ystrad, Meurig. His pedigree includes Rawburn Bannockburn, out of Fordel Minnesota Prime daughter HW Kandy U649, with the serving sire being HW Main Event, a Millah Murrah Klooney sire bred by Netherton Miss Effie.
Two other batches sold for 4800gns with Irish breeders, MM. Mckiernan, Ballinagh, Cavan, buying the first. It was the March born heifer, HW Precious Pollot, an Abacus daughter out of a previous Pollot bred at home by Rawburn Boss Hogg.
Robin Orr, Dunfermline, purchased the second, HW Fleur V704, a cow born April 2019, by Rawburn Boss Hogg, out of former Fleur of Netherton Boston. She sold her third calf to Abacus.
